COMPOSER

RIMSKY-KORSAKOV

Christmas Eve Suite (1895)

Although made into a suite, "Christmas Eve" ("Noch' pered Rozhdestvom), was originally  an opera Rimsky-Korsakov composed in 4 acts  with a libretto written by himself in 1894-1895 and based on a short story of the same title, "Christmas Eve," by Nikolay Gogol's "Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka." The same story also formed the basis of Tchaikovsky's operas "Vakula the Smith" and "Cherevichki."
