Zion’s Walls is a revivalist tune originally written by
John G. McCurry (1821-1886), a farmer from Georgia
who published the song collection, The Social Harp (1885).

Aaron Copland scored Zion’s Walls for solo voice and piano
and published it, along with nine other folk songs, in Old
American Songs. Copland used this song again in his opera,
The Tender Land (1952-1954). Copland’s orchestration
alternates between various instruments playing the tune with
the singer and descant instrumental accompaniment,
sometimes using both in one phrase.

Come fathers and mothers,
Come sisters and brothers,
Come join us in singing the praises of Zion.

O fathers don't you feel determined
To meet within the walls of Zion.
We'll shout and go round the walls of Zion.

Dives and Lazarus: Raising of Lazarus
Based on a 16th Century English folk-tune,
scored for harp (preferably two) and string
orchestra this piece is about the well-known
parable of of the rich man and Lazarus
(also called the Dives and Lazarus or Lazarus
and Dives) told by Jesus in Luke 16:19-31.

"Dives and Lazarus" is a parable, a moral story,
told by Jesus about a rich man (Dives) and a poor
man (Lazarus).  In the story, Lazarus comes up to
Dives' house and begs for food.  After multiple
refusals by Dives to provide Lazarus with anything
to eat and even outright attacking him, Lazarus
dies. In death, Lazarus is rewarded a positive after-
life in Heaven, whereas when Dives eventually
dies, he is sent to Hell for his actions.

Vaughan-Williams first came across the
ballad of Dives and Lazarus in 1893,
in a copy of "English Country Songs."
As he recollected,
"I had that sense of recognition;
here's something which I have known all my life,
only I didn't know it."

Forty-six years later, when the British Council

and Vaughan Williams came up with the Five
Variants of Dives and Lazarus which are not
really a set of variations in the conventional
sense but, as Vaughan-Williams describes them,
"reminiscences of various versions."
They demonstrate his ability to incorporate simple
folk melodies into almost symphonic creations.
