This painting is “African Sonata,” by Vladimir Kush. It has grassland made of trumpets and cymbals, an antelope with a lyre for horns, and clouds shaped like musical notes. The center of attention is three elephants with tubas for heads. It shows the similarity of how both elephants and tubas make loud, powerful noises. Yet, it juxtaposes how the sound of an elephant’s trumpeting and other noises of Africa are natural but the music produced by a tuba and other instruments are man-made.
