WHAT WE DID TODAY #1-54: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2010

GENERAL MUSIC PERIODS 2,3,6
COMPOSER: PETER ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY

Seiji Ozawa - Berlin Philharmonic
OBJECTIVE: Musical performance
QUOTE AUTHOR: Richard Wagner
.....q. German opera composer who was alive in the 1800's
.....b. famous for: Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin, popularly known as the wedding march "Here Comes the Bride"

Wagner: Lohengrin, "Bridal Chorus"

Practiced new holiday song: We Wish You a Merry Christmas

Learned new note F# [fingering T12356 or because the right hand looks like "ears" on a shadow puppet of a rabbit, I call the fingering for F# "ears" (middle fingers are down-mouth outer two fingers are up-ears)]

Showed location of F# on the keyboard

Reviewed the fingering on the recorder by changing the letter names to finger numbers.

Analysed which fingering muscle movements were difficult and then pulled out the ones that we need to learn as automatic reflexes and practiced them with silent fingerings.

Chart with the song has some note passages in red. I asked students to tell me why I did that. Many students imediately saw sequenced patterns. Then we played just the sequenced patterns so children could hear the patterns.

DECEMBER 9th is the holiday concert for chorus, band, and strings. Recorder students are invited to play their instruments ("recorder carolling") as the pre-concert activity outside of the gym. This is not mandatory; just a fun way to celebrate the holidays through music. We will play the holiday music learned in class. All students need to bring is their recorder; music and accompaniments will be already set-up. More details to follow as I get them.
