VISION: O Euchari In Leta Via
video

O Euchari In Leta Vita:  This religious piece was written in honor of St. Eucharius, the missionary to the Gauls, the first bishop of the city, and the man who laid the cornerstone to Trier Cathedral, the oldest cathedral north of the Alps. Hildegard probably wrote the music and poetry for the monks of the monastery in Trier devoted to his worship. This Sequence would have been sung during Mass on Eucharius' feast day, December 8.

1. MUSIC NOTATION DEVELOPED IN THE CHURCH DURING THE MEDIEVAL TIMES AS A
WAY OF PRESERVING THE MUSIC WRITTEN FOR THE RELIGIOUS SERVICES AS THERE HAD
NOT BEEN RECORDING DEVICES INVENTED YET

2. EARLY NOTES WERE CALLED NEUMES

3. LINES and SPACES OF THE MUSICAL STAFF WERE PATTERNED AFTER THE FINGERS OF THE HAND
(FIVE FINGERS and FOUR SPACES IN BETWEEN)

4. HILDEGARD WAS A NUN WHO WROTE MUSIC FOR THE CHURCH and THE MUSIC SURVIVED BECAUSE
SHE WAS EDUCATED IN MUSIC NOTATION

5. MUCH OF NON-CHURCH (SECULAR) MUSIC DID NOT SURVIVE FROM THE MEDIEVAL TIMES BECAUSE
THE AVERAGE PERSON WHO CREATED THIS MUSIC HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF MUSIC NOTATION

6. TODAY OUR KNOWLEDGE OF MUSIC FROM THIS TIME PERIOD IS MOSTLY FROM THE CHURCH
