William Tell

William Tell was a Swiss
legendary hero who symbolized
the struggle for political and individual
freedom. According to popular legend,
he was a late 13th and early 14th century

governor’s life, saved the same governor’s
life en route to prison, escaped, and

The strings play quickly to represent the rising wind and

the woodwind instruments play notes to represent the first drops of rain (2.45-3.35).
There is a crescendo (3.35-3.43) and then the storm finally breaks out.
The strings play falling figures (3.43-3.45) that are answered by rising figures on the trombones (3.45-3.48).

This gives the impression of things being tossed around in the storm.
The timpani drum and bass drum imitate thunder (3.43-4.31).

Can you hear them playing throughout the storm?
There is a diminuendo to represent the storm dying away (4.31-4.51). 
The woodwind instruments play notes like before to represent the last drops of rain (4.52-5.12).
The strings play lower and lower pitched notes to represent the wind losing its power (5.01-5.12).
A solo flute plays (5.12-5.34).

This gives the impression of birds starting to reappear and sing after the storm.

The peaceful mountainside scene is rudely interrupted by a fanfare of trumpets and horns (8.21-8.34).

Fanfares were commonly played in battle.
The famous galloping tune is played by the full orchestra (8.34-8.46).
