WHAT WE DID TODAY #1-39: TUESDAY; OCTOBER 26, 2010

GENERAL MUSIC PERIODS 2,3,6 COMPOSER: BACH
OBJECTIVE: Recorder fingering and muscle movement coordination of notes from the C Major scale
1. QUOTE AUTHOR: Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach
.....a. He was a German musician and composer, the second son of J.S. Bach and Maria Barbara Bach. He was a founder of the Classical style. (http://www.bach-cantatas.com/Lib/Bach-Carl-Philipp-Emanuel.htm)
.....b. One of his most famous pieces was the "Solfeggietto No.2 in C Minor H.220, W.117"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74eBHfNbCNc&feature=related
2. BACH COMPOSER REPORT #2
.....a. We will finish this Wednesday by writing our opinions about Bach's music.
.....b. Included with the report that will be turned in will be the notes taken yesterday during the film about Bach.
..........1)Those not turning in Bach film notes will be completing the Bach composer report with the sections we have not already completed (the report is found on this Blog).
..........2)Students not turning in the Bach film notes will complete the composer report during class while the others will be going to the keyboards to work on practicing their songs for our mini-recital.
3. RECORDER WARM-UP
.....a. Using echo technique review notes "B" (T1), "A" (T12), "G" (T123), "F" (T1234), "E" (T12345), "D" (T123456) and "C" [or middle "C" as found on the keyboard (T1234567)]
.....b. New fingering T02 ("C" one octave higher than middle "C" or "high C")
..........1)Practiced muscle movement pattern of "A" (T12) to High "C" (T02) to make into an automatic reflex
..........2)Practiced muscle movement pattern of "B" (T1) to High "C" (T02) to make into an automatic reflex (fingers 1 and
alternate back and forth)
.....c. Try all notes in order (descending) from high "C" down to low or middle "C"
..........1)This is a "C" major scale going down (DO-TI-LA-SOL-FA-MI-RE-DO) and I showed the students what it looked like on the keyboard.
..........2)Played the scale passage again changing the rhythm and produced the first phrase of "Joy to the World"
4. HOLIDAY SONG: JOY TO THE WORLD
.....a. Showed the music and reviewed how many of the passages of music are made up of scales or scale like (step-wise)passages.
.....b. Class reviewed the recorder fingerings and sight read through the song
.....c. We looked at the music and discovered where the main "skips" were as skips are usually harder to play then steps.
.....d. The hardest skip pattern is middle (or low) "C" to high "C" so we pulled the two notes out and worked on learning
the muscle movement pattern. (The movement pattern will not be really learned until it becomes an automatic reflex)
.....e. Some students noticed that I had colored in certain notated passages with different colors.
..........1)The colors represented sections with patterns in them. I asked the students if they could identify what types of patterns they were seeing. (Actually, we hear the patterns but placing them into colors in notation makes the patterns they hear more obvious.)
.............a)As stated before, one pattern was the scale passage.
.............b)Another pattern was played twice, exactly the same.
.............c)Yet another pattern was played twice but this the second time every note was the same except one note lower; this type of pattern is called a "sequence."
.....f. Played with piano accompaniment and had a student act as a pointer.
5. HOLIDAY SONG: WHACKY NUTCRACKER (Period 2 played this)
6. HOLIDAY SONG: JOLLY OLD ST. NICK (Period 2 and 3 played this)
.....a. Reviewed fingering and then played the music without finger numbers on the chart.
.....b. Played song with a pre-recorded accompaniment for the first time.
7. BECAUSE WE HAVE STUDENTS AT VARYING ABILITY LEVELS I DECIDED THAT WE ARE GOING TO PUT ON A MINI-RECITAL THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 8, 9, 10.
1. Students will choose a song to play from the music we have been working on in class and/or a piece that I pre-approve of at their ability level.
2. During the next few weeks, when we have our keyboard playing days in class, students will practice the pieces they

BEGINNING VIOLIN PERIOD 5:
OBJECTIVE: PREPARATION FOR HOLIDAY PERFORMANCE ON DECEMBER 9th
1. TUNE

2. HOLIDAY SONG: GREENSLEEVES (1st section)

.....a. Reviewed note names and fingerings and sight read through 3. HOLIDAY SONG: COVENTRY CAROL
....a. BEG. VIOLIN (HARMONY PART)
....b. VIOLIN (MELODY PART)
........1)So many students are learning the other part so quickly that we decided we wanted to try the harder part.
........2)Those who wish to remain on the easier part for the performance may do so but I am instructing everyone on the harder part for a learning experience anyway.
........3)Song uses low second finger (sad or minor do-re-may pattern) and has an added note we have not used before called G# (a note fingered 1/2 step higher than the normal 3rd finger position we have been using)
...........a)A SHARP (#) raises the pitch of a note 1/2 step so the finger needs to be moved up 1/2 step on the fingerboard (in the direction toward the bridge)
.....c. We will continue working on this.

VIOLIN PERIOD 4:

WHAT WE DID TODAY #1-36: THURSDAY; OCTOBER 21, 2010

GENERAL MUSIC PERIODS 2,3,6
COMPOSER: BACH: Invention #4 in D Minor played by the famous pianist Glenn Gould)

OBJECTIVE: NOTE READING ON THE KEYBOARD/NOTE READING BY STEP-WISE MOTION
1. QUOTE AUTHOR: Fryderyk Chopin
.....a. Term used in the quote: "odious" meaning detestable; repulsive.
.....b. Chopin wrote many famous pieces of music (especially for the piano). A famous piece that he wrote that most everyone has heard is called the "Marche Funebre" (Funeral March)
2. BACH COMPOSER REPORT #2
.....a. Due to the fact that I was having the computer fixed and the older loaner given me could not read the word processing program that had all the slides for this report, I decided to go back to this report next Monday as my computer will be fixed by then.
3. RECORDER WARM-UP
.....a. Using echo technique review notes "B" (T1), "A" (T12), "G" (T123), "F" (T1234), "E" (T12345), "D" (T123456) and "C" [or middle "C" as found on the keyboard (T1234567)]
.....b. New fingering T02 ("C" one octave higher than middle "C" or "high C")
..........1)Practiced muscle movement pattern of "A" (T12) to High "C" (T02) to make into an automatic reflex
..........2)Practiced muscle movement pattern of "B" (T1) to High "C" (T02) to make into an automatic reflex (fingers 1 and 2 alternate back and forth)
.....c. Try all notes in order (descending) from high "C" down to low or middle "C"
..........1)This is a "C" major scale going down (DO-TI-LA-SOL-FA-MI-RE-DO) and I showed the students what it looked like on the keyboard.
..........2)Played the scale passage again changing the rhythm and produced the first phrase of "Joy to the World"
4. HOLIDAY SONG: JOY TO THE WORLD (Period 3 and 6 need to start on this part next week)
.....a. Showed the music and explained how many of the passages of music are made up of scales or scale like (step-wise)passages.
.....b. Class reviewed the recorder fingerings and sight read through the song
.....c. We looked at the music and discovered where the main "skips" were as skips are usually harder to play then steps.
.....d. The hardest skip pattern is middle (or low) "C" to high "C" so we pulled the two notes out and worked on learning the muscle movement pattern. (The movement pattern will not be really learned until it becomes an automatic reflex)
2. During the next few weeks, when we have our keyboard playing days in class, students will practice the pieces they have chosen to play at our recital.
3. I will divide the class into groups of thirds and students in each group will perform on one of the scheduled days.
4. Students will perform their chosen song by themselves (solo).

BEGINNING VIOLIN PERIOD 5:
OBJECTIVE: PREPARATION FOR HOLIDAY PERFORMANCE ON DECEMBER 9th
1. TUNE
2. Major Scales 1 octave UH bow
3. Discuss and demonstrate playing scales as double-stops (fingering on the lower string while playing the neighboring higher string)
.....a. A question was posed about what to do if the finger (fingering a note) accidentially touches the open string.
Answer:
..........1)The angle of the finger, as it places down on a string, is not always the same.
..........2)Often times, in order to play and open string while fingering on the neighboring string the finger angle must be contorted (or bent a little differently) than normal.
.....b. We will start trying to play scales double-stopped with open strings the next time we work on scales.
3. HOLIDAY SONG: GOOD KING WENCESLAS
.....a. Because I was using an old computer while mine was being fixed I had trouble getting the sound recording to work so we played our music "acapella" without accompaniment.
.....b. We worked onarticulation; to make all the violins start and stop together.
.....c. A student was the bow leader to help everyone know who to follow in terms of bowings and articulation.
.....d. We played the hardest passage in the music which used a 2nd finger (note "B") on the "G" string.

VIOLIN PERIOD 4:
OBJECTIVE: Preparation for: Harvest Day performance on October 28th/Holiday Program December 9th
1. TUNE
2. MUSIC STANDS WERE SET-UP

3. HOLIDAY SONG: GOOD KING WENCESLAS
.....a. Worked with the guitar on understanding his part: Melody/Tablature
.....b. Practice Technique: Layering in the parts.
...........1)Started off having keyboard play bass line/harmony part
...........2)Added in cellos to bass line/harmony
...........3)Lastly, added in violin harmony parts (everyone)
..............a)Everyone learning the harmony part is good because it is good for sight reading, hearing intonation, and understanding how the melody part will fit in with the harmony. (It is sort-of like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle being fit together.)
......c. Asked keyboard to replay harmony part again only this time I played the melody against the harmony part so everyone could hear how the parts were to fit together.
......d. Everyone then split into melody and harmony parts: violins and guitar on melody/keyboard and cellos on harmony and both parts were played together
......e. Violins and guitar (melody) then needed to practice their part alone.
............1)As a group the fingering was reviewed
............2)Music was practiced but bows were not articulated together yet and we need to add in the slurred bow passages as well.
4. REVIEW SONGS FOR THE HARVEST FESTIVAL (PRACTICED DURING HR)
.....a. HOEDOWN

.....b. ORANGE BLOSSOM SPECIAL
.....c. DE COLORES

WHAT WE DID TODAY #1-35: WEDNESDAY; OCTOBER 20, 2010

GENERAL MUSIC PERIODS 2,3,6
COMPOSER: BACH: Prelude in C Major ("Ave Maria")

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fO78AqC1IE4

1. The Bach/Gounod Ave Maria is a popular and much-recorded setting of the Latin text Ave Maria.
2. Written by French Romantic composer Charles Gounod (http://www.charles-gounod.com/vi/index.htm) in 1859, his Ave Maria consists of a melody superimposed over the Prelude No. 1 in C major from Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier (BWV 846), composed by J. S. Bach some 137 years earlier. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ave_Maria_(Bach/Gounod)]
3. The idea of adding a new melody part over an existing older piece of music is not a new idea.
.....a. The term "Mash-Up" is a modern term that is used for this style used in modern pop music
...........1)A "mash-up" or blend is a song or composition created by blending two or more pre-recorded songs, usually by
overlaying the vocal track of one song seamlessly over the instrumental track of another.
OBJECTIVE: NOTE READING ON THE KEYBOARD/NOTE READING BY STEP-WISE MOTION
1. QUOTE AUTHOR: Robert Schumann
2. BACH COMPOSER REPORT #2
....a. Wrote down information in the first two sections of the report (PLEASE SEE THIS BLOG FOR THE INFORMATION)
....b. Discussed how Bach came from a large musical family and how many of his male family members were given the first name of Johann (Bach's first name also) (http://jan.ucc.nau.edu/tas3/fam.html)
.........1)Having a middle name made it easier to distinguish one Bach from another.
.....c. We wrote down some general information about Bach: dates, country of origin
.....d. Wrote down the names of 5 Bach pieces we heard in class and I briefly reviewed them.
NOTE READING BY STEP-WISE MOTION ON THE KEYBOARD:
.....a. Students took out the songs that they prepared the music notation on and were instructed to play the songs on the keyboard
.........1)JOLLY OLD ST. NICHOLAS
.........2)JINGLE BELLS
.....b. On the top of the music sheet, for each song, is a small keyboard chart showing where the keys are located.
.........1)Students are to place the right hand fingers on the keys in advance before playing so they can use their eyes to watch the music instead of their fingers.
.....c. I was moving about the room to check for understanding and having students play the songs for me as time allowed.
4. For students finishing early, they are to go back to the packet of keyboard songs to be played by finger numbers (a continuation of what we did last week) working on songs starting from "America" and "Yankee Doodle" then moving on to the next piece.
.....a. Each student works at their own pace; at their ability level.
.....b. Because we were doing a few sections of the Bach Composer Report today I mentioned that I had a student's (playable; shortened and by number) version of Bach's "Toccata" (one of the pieces we had learned about in class and had also written down in our report). So, I brought out the music and played it for the class. Some students asked if they could try playing it and after a little instruction some of the students were able to play some of the passages already.
5. BECAUSE WE HAVE STUDENTS AT VARYING ABILITY LEVELS I DECIDED THAT WE ARE GOING TO PUT ON A MINI RECITAL THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 8, 9, 10.
1. Students will choose a song to play from the music we have been working on in class and/or a piece that I pre-approve of at their ability level.
2. During the next few weeks, when we have our keyboard playing days in class, students will practice the pieces they have chosen to play at our recital.
3. I will divide the class into groups of thirds and students in each group will perform on one of the scheduled days
4. Students will perform their chosen song by themselves (solo)

BEGINNING VIOLIN PERIOD 5:
OBJECTIVE: PREPARATION FOR HOLIDAY PERFORMANCE ON DECEMBER 9th
1. TUNE

2. DO-RE-MI-FA (pattern starting on open strings)
.....a. Combining this DO-RE-MI-FA (0 1 23 ) pattern on two consecutive strings creates a major (1 octave) scale
.....b. Students played "G" major scale, "D" major scale, and "A" major scale (UH and LH of bow)
.....c. We ascended up the scale (placing fingers down in order)
.....d. We descended down the scale
..........1)Lifted off the fingers in order on the higher of the 2 strings
..........2)Placed all 3 fingers down (in the position for which they will be lifted off from) on the lower string ahead of time
..........3)Lifted fingers off in order
3. HOLIDAY SONG: COVENTRY CAROL
.....a. We started practicing with me pointing to the notes and then periodically I would stop pointing to see if the students could follow the music on their own.
.....b. Most of the time students did not get lost.
4. HOLIDAY SONG: GOOD KING WENCSLAS
.....a. Played the song at tempo all the way through.
.....b. Because the music is a little fast, to relax the anxiety from the speed, I had the students break the music up into
"red-D string" notes and "blue-G string" notes.
..........1)With the accompaniment we played only the blue notes, then only the red notes.
We will continue with this song tomorrow.

WHAT WE DID TODAY #1-33: MONDAY; OCTOBER 18, 2010

GENERAL MUSIC PERIODS 2,3,6
COMPOSER: BACH: Invention #1 in C Major
played by the famous pianist Glenn Gould)
1. Term Invention:
.....a. In music, an invention is a short composition (usually for a keyboard instrument) with two or three part counterpoint.
.....b. Counterpoint is where two or more melodic strands occur simultaneously in separate voices.
..........1)The term comes from the Latin punctus contra punctum (note against note).
.....c. These "Inventions" were originally written by Bach as exercises for the musical education of his students.
OBJECTIVE: NOTE READING ON THE KEYBOARD/NOTE READING BY STEP-WISE MOTION
1. QUOTE AUTHOR: Irving Berlin
.....a. Famous American composer of Broadway musicals and popular music of the early 20th Century
"There's No Business Like Show Business" by Irving Berlin

2. SOLFEGE: Using different patterns we have been working on in class students will answer the teacher back (as we have done before) this time using which ever pattern the teacher uses:
.....a. SOL-MI
.....b. SOL-MI-LA
.....c. DO-RE-MI
.....d. MI-RE-DO
3. NOTE READING BY STEP-WISE MOTION:
.....a. Students given music notation of 2 holiday songs that we played on recorder last week.
.....b. As we were taught last week, students are to place the note names down on their own music by themselves.
.....c. We reviewed as necessary for those who needed it.
.....d Students were to have their music with notes named checked by the teacher individually then instructed to go to keyboard to play them:
.........1)JOLLY OLD ST. NICHOLAS
.........2)JINGLE BELLS
.....e. On the top of the music sheet, for each song, is a small keyboard chart showing where the keys are located.
.........1)Students are to place the right hand fingers on the keys in advance before playing so they can use their eyes to watch the music instead of their fingers.
4. For students finishing early, they are to go back to the packet of keyboard songs to be played by finger numbers (a continuation of what we did last week) working on songs starting from "America" and "Yankee Doodle" then moving on to the next piece.
.....a. Each student works at their own pace; at their ability level.
TOMORROW THE TEACHER WILL CHECK TO SEE THAT EVERYONE CAN PLAY THE SONGS FROM THOSE SHEETS WE WORKED ON TODAY.

BEGINNING VIOLIN PERIOD 5:
OBJECTIVE: PREPARATION FOR HOLIDAY PERFORMANCE/DOUBLE STOPPING
1. TUNE
2. DO-RE-MI-FA/FA-MI-RE-DO (0 1 23 - 32 1 0) 1x each string at UH of bow; repeat again at LH of the bow
.....a. Using this pattern on two consecutive strings forms a major scale
.....b. Teacher demonstrates "G" major scale, "D" major scale, "A" major scale
.....c. We will start learning these scales as our warm-ups
3. Review names of notes on each string using the musical alphabet
4. HOLIDAY SONG: GOOD KING WENCESLAS
.....a. Review note reading by stepwise motion
.....b. Review fingering
.....c. Separated the music into small passages and practiced them slowly
.....d. Tried to play the music with the accompaniment as teacher pointed to notes
.....e. Practice technique:
..........1)Everyone played the notes that were only on the "G" string (blue notes) while tracking (but not playing) the "D" string (red) notes with the accompaniment
..........2)After practicing and getting comfortable with this, we reversed the exercise playing the "D" string notes while tracking the "G" string notes
..........3)We had a suggestion from a student to divide half the class where one group plays the "G" string notes and the others the "D" string notes against the recorded accompaniment. So, we tried it and it was a good suggestion.
..........4)Lastly, we played a the notes with the accompaniment.
This technique is used to teach continuity; to help students to keep their focus from the beginning to the end of a piece without allowing nerves to take over when mistakes are made.

VIOLIN PERIOD 4:
OBJECTIVE: Preparation for: Harvest Day performance on October 28th/Holiday Program December 9th
1. TUNE
2. MUSIC STANDS WERE SET-UP
3. REVIEW SONGS FOR THE HARVEST FESTIVAL
.....a. HOEDOWN

.....b. ORANGE BLOSSOM SPECIAL
..........1)Lower parts had trouble keeping the beat steady so they were asked to play alone with the accompaniment as the violins listened to see if they were keeping the beat.
.....c. DE COLORES
4. COVENTRY CAROL (during HR)
.....a. Worked with advanced violins on the melody

.....b. Added the beginning violins to the melody part
5. HAVA NAGILA (during HR)
.....a. Introduced this piece to the advanced violins
.....b. Played the recording for the students with the beginning violins playing the harmony and myself playing the melody
.....c. Showed the advanced violins how to play the first 5 notes which uses an interval of C# to Bb that we pulled out and practiced separately.
.....d. We worked on the first phrase and will continue working on this.

1. Reviewed songs and main characters we had seen at the last showing and added them to our report:
.....a. SONGS ADDED FROM LAST SHOWING OF THE MUSICAL:
..........1)WHERE IS LOVE
..........2)CONSIDER YOURSELF
.....b. MORE CHARACTERS ADDED FROM THE LAST SHOWING OF THE MUSICAL:
..........1)ARTFUL DODGER
.............a)Head pickpocket
.............b)Named "artful" because he was skilled at being a pickpocket and "dodger" because he could could get away from the crime scene quickly without being caught.
2. Discussed new characters that will be met in today's showing:
.....a. FAGIN:
...........1)The adult in charge of the boy pickpockets.
...........2)He would sell the stolen items and split the proceeds with his partner Bill Sykes.
...........3)He used the boys to steal for him and in return he fed and gave them shelter.
...........4)Provided somewhat better living conditions for the young boys then the orphanage did.
...........5)Fagin was a thief but he was not a murderer.
.....b.. BILL SIKES:
..........1)Partner of Fagin.
..........2)A thief and murderer.
..........3)Would steal large items and bring them to Fagin to sell and then split the profits.

DUE TO COMPUTER PROBLEMS THERE ARE ONLY 2 QUOTES DUE THIS WEEK, ANY OTHERS FINISHED WILL GO FOR EXTRA CREDIT POINTS

BEGINNING VIOLIN PERIOD 5:
OBJECTIVE: PREPARATION FOR HOLIDAY PERFORMANCE/NOTE READING FINGERED NOTES 1. TUNE
2. DO-RE-MI-FA/FA-MI-RE-DO ( 0 1 23 32 1 0 ) each string bowing UH and LH
.....a. Reviewed about the 3rd finger and how in this fingering pattern 2nd and 3rd fingers touch or "feel the skin" of each other ("tip to tip")
.....b. Reviewed and quizzed the note name of the 3rd finger on each string by using this rule:
..........1)3rd finger on the string is the same note as the neighboring lower open string
..........2)Example:
.............a)3rd finger on the "D" string is note G
.............b)3rd finger on the "A" string is note D
.............c)3rd finger on the "E" string is note A
..........3)This rule cannot be applied to the "G" string as there is no lower string.
3. GOOD KING WENCESLAS
.....a. This song entails using open strings and fingered notes.
.....b. Requires the need to learn how to read new notes besides the open string notes we have already learned.
.....c. By using a few conceptual rules, by knowing the musical location of the open strings on the music staff, all the other notes and fingerings (in the first position) will be easy to identify.
.....d. UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF PUTTING (ADDING) FINGERS DOWN ON A STRING CONSECUTIVELY
..........1)The more fingers added on to a single string makes the string shorter so the shorter the string the higher it's pitch.
..........2)Each pitch is given a letter of the musical alphabet (A, B, C, D, E, F, or G)
..........3)Starting with an open string letter name, every time you put down (or add) a finger in consecutive order the added finger raises the pitch and letter name of the musical alphabet by one.
.............a)Ex: A string: 0=A, 1=B, 2=C, 3=D, 4=E
..........4)Question asked: Why are there only 7 letters in the musical alphabet?
.............a)Using the keyboard we reviewed the patterns on the keys (5 black keys named sharps and/or flats..we had already had a lesson on this)
.............b)If there are only 5 black keys in the pattern how many white keys are there?
.............c)Answer was 7.
.............d)That is why there are only 7 letters in the musical alphabet (the black keys are named after the white keys)
.............e)The 7 white keys of the keyboard are given the first 7 letters of the alphabet( in music it is called thwe "musical alphabet"); since the pattern of the white keys starts all over again, after the letter "G" the next letter will go back to "A" and the pattern restarts
..........5)We reviewed the letter names of the notes on each string
.....e. CONCEPT OF MOVING IN STEP-WISE MOTION ON THE MUSICAL STAFF and VIOLIN FINGERING
..........1)Review the musical staff which consists of 5 lines and 4 spaces that notes sit on
.............a)Space note: a note that sits on space; has either a line above and/or below it but never in the center
.............b)Line note: a note which always has a line in its center
.............c)Leger line: added lines to the staff; can either be above or below
..........2)We have already been reading the open string notes in music notation. All open string notes are "space" notes.
..............a)By adding the first finger down on the open string the note will move up to the very next line.
..............b) By adding the second finger down next to the first finger that note will be located on the very next space, etc. ..............c) So, (in the first position):
..................1)Odd numbered fingers (1,3) will be used on lined notes
..................2)Even numbered fingers (0, 2, 4) will be used on space notes
.....f. CONCEPT OF MOVING IN STEP-WISE MOTION ON THE MUSICAL STAFF and NOTE READING
..........1)Every time the note moves up from a space to the very next line or a line to the very next space the note name is one letter higher in the musical alphabet
.............a)If open "A" is a space note then first finger on the "A" string is line note (called B)
.............b)If first finger on the "A" string is a line note (called B) then second finger on the "A" string is a space note [called C(#)]
.............c)If second finger on the "A" string is a space note [called C (#)] then third finger on the "A" string is a line note (called D)
.............d)If third finger on the "A" string is a line note (called D) then 4th finger on the "A" string is a space note (called E)
.............e)A fourth finger on a string has the same pitch and note name as the next neighboring higher open string
(except on the "E" string as we have no string higher than "E")
.....g. STARTED TO PLAY SONG ON THE VIOLIN IN SMALL SEGMENTS..to continue Monday
