From the Latin word serenus meaning "serenity, a serenade is a
musical composition and/or performance in someone's honor,
originally songs of courtship, but evolving later into sophisticated
musical works. Serenades of the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries were more than likely written in a light mood and usually
 for an evening's entertainment.
